ARTIST BIO

Salvador Loreto was born on 28 June 1942 in Algeciras, Andalucia, Spain to a large gypsy family whose tradition is flamenco and bullfighting.

Under the name "el Gitanillo de Algeciras" Loreto started his career of bullfighting, but gave it away after being badly gored by a bull at the age of 15 years.

Painting and drawing at an early age, once his career as a bullfighter came to an end, he turned to singing (under the names of "Montoyita" and here in Australia "el Titi de Algeciras"), however it was painting that became his greatest love and passion.

Although never receiving a formal education due to discrimination against gypsies in Franco's Spain, between 1958 - 1961 he was able to study at various art schools in Algeciras, Madrid and Bilbao.  In Spain he was commissioned to undertake several major public works and later began to exhibit as a solo artist.

In Adelaide, South Australia, one of the highlights of his career was to twice have the privilege of painting the authorised portraits of the late Don Dunstan, former Pemier of South Australia.  These paintings now have great historical significance in South Australia.

The last portrait "DON" finalised in 1998 now hangs in the foyer of the Adelaide Festival Centre.

During his long and varied career, Loreto has exhibited in Europe, Japan and Singapore.  In Australia  he has exhibited in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

Collections of his work are held in Australia, Paris, Switzerland, Nagoya-Japan and Spain.
